History Part 2

Speaking of the defect in school curricula which fail to give a, intelligent and interesting introduction to history, Charlotte Mason says:

" It is never too late to mend but we may not delay to offer such a liberal and generous diet of History to every child in the country as shall give weight to his decisions, consideration to his actions and stability to his conduct; that stability, the lack of which has plunged us into many a stormy sea of unrest." Charlotte Mason goes on to implore us to:
 “Give them the right books.”

I believe now more than ever that a lack of history being taught has contributed to the unrest that we see in society today. Not as much what has been taught but how it is taught. It’s so important that we give them books that make history come alive.

I have seen where teaching my older children the harsh truths of history and yet giving them a biblical foundation to process those truths has made them more prepared for the days ahead. It has made them solid in their perception of the world. It has made them leery of seeing history repeat itself.  It has given them a realistic view of dictators and evil leaders, not as demons in powerful position, but as the result of what human beings become capable of as they turn from the truth of God’s word and allow their sinful desires to permeate their hearts. When we learn enough about history and historical figures that we can see their journey whether good or bad, it helps us to recognize when we ourselves or those around us begin to cling to similar moral compasses or viewpoints.

My 11th grader studied American History to 1877 this year. If you think I love @mfwbooks for the younger grades, I love the high school years so much more!  I’m so thankful for this curriculum.
