The Moment My Heart Almost Burst

Yesterday, the kids did their annual homeschool evaluations. In our state it is required that once a year you meet with a certified teacher and she looks over your child’s work and talks with them and decides whether or not your child is showing progress and performing at their grade level.

The kids did so good!  She was specifically so impressed with their reading. I was so happy to tell her all about our journey with reading and the hurdles of Dyslexia and how it brought us to All About Reading!  We now have used Level One and are on Level Two and Ezra is reading fluently!  I can’t believe the kid who hated everything about reading has blossomed into this kid who reads everyday for 30 minutes or more!  Lately I’ve been finding him reading books to his sister in the mornings too!

                                Level One

There were so many hard days where he just struggled. Not only in learning to read in general but in just training his brain to flip letters the right way and to read left to right. I talk more about this in an older post, (search Dyslexia) but I’ve never had a child with Dyslexia & it was quite a learning curve. Having done all the same things I did with my other kids, (who are avid readers) he just wasn’t getting it.  After our evaluation Ezra came to me crying and thanking me for teaching him and being his teacher. He was so overwhelmed with gratitude that my mama heart was about to burst! Only he and I know what kind of journey we have been on.  I’m so thankful he feels that I was with him in this and was willing to do whatever it took to help him

At the end of first grade he couldn’t keep up with the reading required in his very gentle curriculum and that’s when I started researching. I found All About Reading and never looked back!  As soon as we started it I knew it was going to be a good fit. The hands on learning and witty stories caught his attention quickly. Even the sticker chart enticed him!  Within about 15 lessons we were ready to jump back into his 1st grade curriculum.

I have continued to do one to two lessons a week and we are now in Level Two.  Although his reading comprehension and ability has passed this level, it is great reinforcement and we just take it slow.  As a matter of fact we spread Level One out over 2nd and 3rd grade and it worked great!

Ezra’s younger sister, Eliana is doing Level One and is already reading.  I love that All About Reading is non-consumable which means I don’t have to buy another book for Eliana. She just uses her brothers book. I saved all of the games in a 3 ring binder, so they are all ready to go! The only thing I did was that  I downloaded another free sticker chart and purchased some new stickers.

Truly open and go, it’s so easy to teach, takes minimal parent prep (cutting out a few pieces sometimes) and the guide tells you exactly what to say. The letter tiles app is a nice touch and my kids really enjoy using it!   I also like that each level is less than 70 lessons, which means it’s easy to supplement with and stretch throughout the year whether your child is homeschooling or in a brick and mortar school.

The illustrations are beautiful!

If you have a new reader or a struggling reader, I can’t recommend this program enough!  It is worth every penny and I think the best reading curriculum out there!  I’m so proud to partner with them and share how amazing they are!

Have you tried All About Reading or All About Spelling? (We are using that too!) I’d especially love to hear your thoughts.   Let me know in the comments!
